DJI Removes Geofencing, in a major policy shift, DJI has updated its drone firmware to remove automatic geofencing, placing the responsibility for adhering to FAA flight restrictions solely on operators. Effective January 13, 2025, Restricted Zones are now categorized as Enhanced Warning Zones, providing alerts instead of enforced flight bans. Operators must stay connected to the internet, update apps, and comply with FAA rules to avoid fines or legal consequences.

This change aligns with similar policies in Europe, reflecting DJI's stance that modern Remote ID systems and regulatory frameworks enable greater operator accountability. The update follows heightened scrutiny after a DJI drone collided with a firefighting aircraft in Los Angeles, raising questions about the effectiveness of existing safety measures.
Compounding these challenges, DJI faces political pressure in the U.S., with potential legislation aiming to ban new DJI sales due to alleged ties to the Chinese military. As DJI evolves its approach, regulators and the industry must collaborate to ensure safe and responsible drone use.
